Soup Seminar FUNDING: Request for Proposals
Due June 1: Soup Seminar Mini Grant Proposals

A successful year-long series of Soup Seminars has now concluded!  The series combined some of the best elements of old fashioned fund-raising and community development.  A wide array of attendees contributed $3 for soup at each seminar, allowing for a mini grant to be offered to students and local community members.

Come up with a grand idea!  The only requirement is that your project must engage and bridge RISD with Providence in some capacity, keeping in the spirit of the Soup Seminar.  As a student, you may want to create a project that works within a certain community population within Providence.  Or as a community member, you may want share or facilitate a project that bridges a gap between RISD and parts of the local community.  We're open to any and all ideas!

Projects can range in scale from $25-$200 and must be completed over the Summer/Fall of 2010.

APPLICATIONS:  Please send a 2-3 page letter of proposal that describes your project, establishes a timeline, and outlines your budget to phocking@risd.edu before noon on Tuesday, 1 June 2010. Up to 5 images can also be appended to the proposal.

It's in the Bag is an open design competition to explore how plastic shopping bags can be reused, remanufactured or recycled, rather than finding their way into landfills. Students from any department and any division, working in teams or individually are invited to submit proposals. Make something new and inventive out of plastic bags. You may manipulate the bags any way you wish - cut, mash, weave, press. Your final product may be an object or an environment. Entries are due April 28.

Get to Know Providence:  Providence, RI is one of the oldest cities in North America. With a history spanning nearly 400 years, the city's landscape narrates the history of the United States and echos the history of those people who inhabited this land prior to European colonization. In addition to a long and complex history, Providence supports a vital contemporary cultural life. Visit our growing list of resources, news sources and activities for getting to know your city.

Relations and Situations:  Susan Sakash, 2008-2009 VISTA in the Office, developed a listing of relational and situational art practices that we've posted as a resource.  Over the year, we will be adding to the list. Let us know of great community-based, relational art or situational art and design programs you encounter!

Spring Break Habitat for Humanity Project: For three days during Spring Break the Office of Public Engagement sponsored a group of 10 RISD students to volunteer at two new South Providence sites of Habitat for Humanity. The weather was beautiful despite the record flooding only days before, and the crew was excited to work. We started with only the foundations poured and over the three days were able to set the first floor beams and deck, and raise the first two walls on each site.
