Design for Social Entrepreneurship
Design for Social Entrepreneurship was a Fall
2008 Industrial design course offered by Sami Nerenberg. All students have been participating with local nonprofits in Providence
throughout the semester to uncover how a product, service, system, space or strategy can improve the services of the organization
or the benefactors directly. The final projects of the course, which represent two weeks of research and four weeks of designing,
are explorations into the power of design to address domestic social needs. Descriptions
of the projects are available on-line.
Respond | Design Wintersession Course
Over Wintersession 2008, eleven graduate students participated in an inquiry course on carbon neutrality at RISD (sponsored by Graduate Studies and
the Office of Public Engagement). The course developed a draft proposal on how RISD can begin the process of significantly
reducing carbon emissions within our community.

Art as a Source of Healing Fall course description
Society for the Arts in Healthcare
Art and healing; RISD program wins international award
[From the 16 April 2008 on-line
edition of the Providence Journal] A Rhode Island School of Design course that pairs fine arts students with young
psychiatric patients has won an international award.
The Rhode Island School of Design’s Art as a Source of Healing
class has been awarded top honor in the Blair L. Sadler International Arts and Healing Competition for representing “one
of the most innovative arts projects, demonstrating a unique partnership between a hospital, a medical school and an art school.”
The
program runs in collaboration with Bradley Hospital, Brown University and RISD. It brings undergraduate students together
with patients at the East Providence Hospital, the country’s first that exclusively helps children, adolescents and
teenagers with mental and emotional problems.
“This course helps our students develop awareness and interest
in serving their community through their artistic talents, an important lesson and one that can’t be easily taught in
a classroom,” said program coordinator Melinda M. Bridgman.
“In many ways, my students are actually learning
more from the children at Bradley, not the other way around.”
The program brings art students, pre-med students,
and psychiatric patients together to work on art projects and develop mentor-type relationships that benefit all parties.
“Art
as a Source of Healing is more than just a college course,” Margaret Paccione-Dyszlewski, director of the department
of behavioral education at Bradley said in a statement. “It is truly a life-changing experience for both the students
as well as the patients here at Bradley Hospital,” says Margaret.
Margaret Paccione-Dyszlewski and Bridgman will
be presented with awards on April 18 at the Society for the Arts in Healthcare’s 19th annual conference in Philadelphia.

Nelson Mandela: Honoring the Legacy
This program is RISD's year-long acknowledgement of the Life and Spirit of Nelson Mandela. The initiative
is created in response to his 90th birthday, and aims to recognize Nelson Mandela as one of the world's living treasures with
the world-at-large as a beneficiary of his lifelong work. This year-long focus is intended to provide intersections for the
many facets of the RISD community to understand Mandela's work, contextualize the values maintained throughout his legacy,
and understand how those values relate to global, contemporary social justice issues.
